Something Cold Touched Me

Something icy cold touched me today
It was only a realization but it cut like steel
And caused me to shudder and chill
Fall is coming and there’s no stopping it
Not here, not in this seasonal place
I want to run away so as not to see
The leaves dying and falling to the ground
Bleeding in bright red and tinged with orange and yellow
Decomposing in dull brown piles on gray wet days
Though the grass is still green
The breeze still warm and the sun still hot
Nevertheless something cold touched me today
And reminded me the saddest season approaches
